About Deck & Fence Guide

Deck & Fence Guide is an independent publication about building and looking after outdoor structures in Western Massachusetts. It covers decks, wood and metal fences, patios, gazebos and pergolas, with New England winters in mind: frost that heaves shallow footings, wet snow on rafters and railings, and road salt on anything near the street.

Articles draw on the Massachusetts State Building Code and the model codes it is based on, manufacturer installation instructions and established building practice. Each town applies the code through its own building department, and zoning rules differ from town to town, so the guide tells you what to ask rather than quoting local figures.

Deck & Fence Guide does not build decks or fences, does not sell leads or materials, and does not represent any contractor. It publishes no paid content. Corrections are welcome through the contact form.
